Description

Welsh Onion Herb Seeds

[80 days] A native of Siberia, the “Welsh” Onion is a long-standing perennial that will bring you a delightful onion flavour no matter the season. The tops are available throughout the winter, while the greens die back in the summer, leaving delightful little bulbs that can be used the same as bulbing onions. Use the tops, the stalks or the bulbs. If you leave the bulbs in the ground (or replant the rooting section of the bulb after harvest), these onions will produce for years on end.

Great for stir-fries, soups, sprouting, salads, and as a garnish.

Height: 45cm (18"). Spread: 10cm (4").

Common Questions

How do you grow Welsh Onion herbs from seed? Sow your Welsh Onion seeds indoor 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost of the season, keeping the soil slightly moist until the germination cycle has completed. Your seeds should begin to sprout in 7 to 10 days and can be transplanted out in to the garden 4 weeks later. Make sure there is no danger of frost before transferring your Welsh Onions outside!

Are Welsh Onions perennial? Once your Welsh Onion plant has been established into your garden you can enjoy their tasty green stems and roots every year!

What should I plant Welsh Onion plants next to? If you're cabbage, kale and radishes are usually destroyed by bugs and insects then you can consider transplanting your Welsh Onion plants close by. The plants are known to deter many bug and insects, however they can attract slugs that will feed on your plant. If you find that slugs are regularly eating your Welsh Onion crops then you can use insecticide.
