Description

Jersey Knight F1 Asparagus Seeds

[3 years to maturity] Jersey Knight is a modern-day hybrid that produces only male plants, thereby increasing the yield substantially. The spears get up to 1” (2 cm) thick and have an excellent flavour. It also happens to be resistant to crown and root rot, as well as to fusarium, making this a great variety all the way around.

Be aware though, asparagus is a perennial that can thrive for well over 15 years. Choose your growing site carefully! Also, be patient. It will be a full three years before you can get a copious harvest from it. Once it’s mature, though, you won’t be disappointed. From then on you’ll have years and years of high quality, great- tasting asparagus popping up every late spring. In fact, once established a Jersey Knight asparagus plant can send up a 2’ spear in less than a day!

Height 45cm (18”)

Common Questions

How long does Asparagus take to grow? Asparagus can take upto 2 years to be grown and ready for harvest. Once your row of Asparagus has been established each crown can produce around 25 spears per year. You can harvest for the next 20 years if maintained.

Can you soak Asparagus seeds to help with germination? Some seeds can take up to 8 weeks to fully germinate, starting the seeds early in the spring season is a must. Soaking the Asparagus seeds in warm water for a couple of hours before planting is believed to help speed up the germination process.

Can you sow Asparagus seeds directly in the ground? Yes, you can sow the seeds directly into the ground at early spring when soil temperature is above 21 degrees Celsius.

How deep are Asparagus roots? Aspargus are usually planted 2 to 3 inches deep, allowing the roots to toughen up. Their dense, strong roots don't turn loose even with strong winds and damp soil so it keeps strong during growth of the crowns.
