Minipop Sweetcorn Seeds
Minipop sweetcorn is incredibly easy to grow and is a great addition to stir-fries or in salads. They offer a sweet taste and crunchier than supermarket-bought sweetcorn.
You can let minipop mature and established on the cob till it’s around 2-3 times in size, peel back part of the husk and if you can see the cob has grown in size with the sweetcorn kernels resembling the size of a pea it’s ready to be harvested and dried.
Hang the cobs up and allow to dry, once the shrinkage has taken place (you can easily tell) when the sweetcorn becomes a yellow / orange colour and there is spacing between the corn kernels you can remove these from the cob, place in a pan with a little oil and enjoy your very own popping popcorn!
Babycorn is just regular sweetcorn but harvested much sooner, the earlier harvest also has additional benefits of being much, much lower in carbs compared to full-sized sweetcorn.
When do I harvest Minipop sweetcorn? Start picking your minipop sweetcorns as soon as the silks begin to appear from the ears and the tassels have darkened. Your minipop will be about 10cm long.
What is eating my Minipop sweetcorn crops? Mice are usually the main culprit for eating your minipop sweetcorn. If you are worried about mice destroying your crops then make sure you pick as soon as the plants have become ripe. If you have no issues with mice or pests then you can allow the corn to mature and make homegrown popcorn!
How do you germinate Minipop sweetcorn seeds? Sow your Minipop sweetcorn in twos about 2.5cm deep with a space of 25 cm. Protect your crops with a cloche, ensuring that it's secure. Your minipop will germinate in 7-10 days and once sprouting has begun you can remove the weaker seedlings.
