In the Falkland Islands, aubergines must be started indoors due to the cold and windy climate. Sow seeds from late December to February using a heated propagator or a very warm, bright indoor area. Maintain consistent temperatures of 21–24°C for successful germination.
Only transplant aubergines once they’re well established and temperatures stay reliably above 10°C, which may only be possible inside heated greenhouses. Outdoor growing is not advised. Mid to late summer (January to early March) is the safest window for moving plants to their final indoor positions.
Use large pots or raised beds inside a greenhouse or polytunnel. Enrich the soil with compost and keep plants in the sunniest, most sheltered position available. Water consistently and feed with a high-potash fertiliser weekly once flowering begins. Ventilation is crucial to prevent fungal issues in enclosed spaces.
It’s challenging but possible. Aubergines need heat, light, and protection—conditions rarely met outdoors in the Falklands. However, with a heated greenhouse or controlled indoor setup, you can successfully grow aubergines as long as you start early and manage temperature carefully.
