Winter Density Lettuce Seeds

[65 days] If you’re looking for an excellent lettuce to over winter, look no further. Winter Density is excellent for our British climes and needs next to no maintenance. Its compact, dark green heads average about 16cm tall and are both heat and cold tolerant (though they need cooler temperatures to germinate).

The texture is best described as a Buttercrunch—somewhere between a bibb and a romaine style of lettuce—and it retains its flavour throughout the season. Its compact heads work well in densely planted gardens and it’s not subject to many pests or diseases. Very tasty in salads and sandwiches.

Common Questions

How do you grow Winter Density lettuce from seed? When growing lettuce you should plant about 10 seeds per square foot, spacing your rows 12 to 18 inches apart. You can also sow and plant your lettuce seeds into small spaces and containers when required.

Do lettuce seeds need full sun to grow properly? It is true that Winter Density lettuce will grow the fastest in full sun, however, it is one of the few vegetables that can tolerate some shade without affecting growth. You will find that spring lettuce crops last longer when protected with shade from the warmer afternoons. Shading is also believed to give enough temperature drops to reduce bolting in springtime.

Does soaking lettuce seeds help germination? Many gardeners believe that soaking any seeds before planting can increase germination rates. You can pick and choose whether you want to experiment by soaking your Winter Density lettuce seeds in water for at least 16 hours before sowing. Making sure that the seeds are placed in a well-lit area.
