Petit Pois: The Sweetheart of the Pea Patch

Petit Pois (literally "little peas" in French) are a special class of early-picked garden peas, known for their exceptional tenderness and concentrated sweetness. They're the same species as standard peas (Pisum sativum), but harvested young and small, making them more refined in taste and texture.

Growing Tips:

  • Sow from March to May in full sun and well-drained soil
  • Support climbing types with pea netting or sticks
  • Harvest early while pods are still small and vibrant green
  • Ideal for containers, raised beds, or small garden plots

You can also succession sow petit pois alongside First and Second Earlies for a rolling harvest of ultra-sweet mini peas.

Culinary Magic:

Petit Pois peas cook in under 2 minutes and shine in:

  • Buttered side dishes
  • Minted pea purée
  • Risottos, pastas and soups
  • Summer salads with herbs, lemon and feta
  • Blanched and frozen for winter elegance

They’re often considered the “champagne of peas”—once you grow them, you won’t go back.
