[55 days] Truly one of the best beetroot varieties in cultivation today, Cylindra beetroot offers superior quality, germination and flavour. Just as its name suggests, Cylindra beetroot produces a cylindrical root about the same circumference around the entire root long. The roots have the satisfyingly deep-red flesh and maintain excellent flavour and texture throughout the growing season (when adequately watered). The roots are between 6-8” (7-10cm), resist going woody, and have a lovely caramel taste.
The greens are sweeter than many other varieties of beets and are great stir-fried, steamed, or stewed. What’s more, its cylindrical shape makes it a cook’s darling, as it’s super easy to cut into uniform pieces (it cuts “like butter!”). The shape of the roots also makes it easier to plant in smaller gardens or allotments, as the plants take up less space.
This variety doesn’t store well, so eat when young and tender.
