When to Pre-Order Garlic in the Falkland Islands

Garlic pre-orders open in August via Growseed. Due to the remote location and limited growing window in the Falklands, it’s best to order early and secure cold-hardy varieties like ‘Mikulov Wight’ and ‘Carcassonne Wight’ for planting during the region’s short summer.

When to Plant Garlic in the Falkland Islands

Outdoor overwintering is not recommended in the Falklands due to extreme wind and prolonged cold. Instead:

  • Spring planting (October to December): Start garlic cloves in modules or trays indoors, then transplant to raised beds, containers, or polytunnels in early summer when the risk of frost has passed.

How to Grow Garlic in the Falkland Islands

Garlic needs full sun, shelter from wind, and free-draining soil. Use raised beds or deep containers with compost-rich soil to improve drainage and warmth. Plant cloves 2–3cm deep and 15cm apart. Protection is essential: use fleece, cloches, or grow inside tunnels to shield young plants. Water sparingly and avoid soggy conditions, especially early in the season.

When to Harvest Garlic in the Falkland Islands

Depending on planting time and shelter, garlic is typically harvested between late February and March. Lift bulbs once the lower leaves yellow and the tops remain partially green. Dry bulbs in a warm, covered space for storage.

Tips for Growing Garlic in the Falkland Islands

  • Order garlic in August to allow for shipping and prep
  • Sow indoors in spring, transplant under cover or in containers
  • Use windbreaks, fleece, or tunnels to protect from exposure
  • Choose hardy varieties suited to cold, short seasons
  • Dry thoroughly after harvest to prevent mould in storage
