Solent Wight Garlic Bulbs

Solent Wight is a softneck garlic, bred especially for our northern climes by the famous garlic farm on The Isle of Wight. It produces large, top quality bulbs full of flavour and exuding a strong, fresh aroma. What’s more, Solent Wight garlic is one of the best storage garlics, lasting well past April if kept cool and dry. Being a softneck garlic, it’s also excellent for braiding and stores attractively as plaits hanging on your wall. It’s best if planted in the late fall, but will still crop well if planted in the early spring.

Common Questions

How to grow Solent Wight? It's a slightly larger variety than other garlics we have on offer, so you need to keep the spacing to the length of your middle finger or 2-3 inches if you want an exact measurement! Push the clove into loos soil just below the surface and cover. Let nature look after it, and only water during prolong periods. Around three weeks before harvesting stop watering - if it rains it's OK!

How to Harvest Solent Wight Garlic? Once the lower leafs have started to turn yellow/brown, use a fork to lift the bulb DO NOT PULL from the ground you risk leaving the bulb behind and pulling the stem. Shake off any excess dirt and place in the sun for 2-3 days to dry off. Once the soil has dried remove all of this from the stem and continue to dry. Avoid getting the bulbs damp or wet as this will rot the bulb.

Planting and Harvesting times? You can plant Solent Wight garlic as late as March in the UK. Harvest is normally around July / August depending on when you planted. If you harvest earlier you can enjoy 'green garlic' or 'wet garlic' this is where the bulb is yet to form and provides a great early harvest feast chopped up and used in a range of dishes! Harvest the garlic late and you risk the bulb rotting in the ground.
