Description

Red Winter Onion Seeds

[120 days] An overwintering onion with pinkish-red skin. The bulbs are good-sized and are ready for harvest a full month earlier than spring-planted sets. The flavour is a bit stronger than yellow onions (which is a good thing for us onion lovers) and they have a longer storage life than yellow onions too.

They’re also amazing storers, lasting from 6-9 months when set up properly. Unlike other over wintering onions, Red winter is best planted between Mid September and Late October or as the climate changes as the soil temperature beings to drop.

Heavy yielding and delicious raw or cooked.

These onion sets are delivered from late November until December. 2021 has been far too mild to plant these any sooner.

Common Questions

How long does it take Red Winter Onions to grow from seed? Red Winter Onion Seeds take about five months to fully mature, if you are growing onions for the first time it is usually recommended to grow from sets. Onion sets mature around 2 months and are less likely to catch diseases from your soil and insects.

Can you soak Red Winter Onion seeds before planting out in the garden? Many gardeners believe that soaking Red Winter Onion seeds before planting offers higher germination rates. Depending on the recommendations you can soak your onion seeds from 15 minutes to a few hours. Some keen growers recommend soaking your onion seeds in warm water or compost tea to help speed up germination.

Do Onions require full sun to grow from seeds? Onions require at least 13 hours of light on daily basis to form a bulb. To ensure you have an Onion Summer harvest you need to plant your Onions out as soon as your soil is movable in the Spring.
