Tender and True Parsnip Seeds

Introduced in 1897, the Tender and True parsnip has long, tapering roots measuring 3 inches across at the shoulder. The long, elegant roots grow reliably straight in stone-free soil, and are therefore favourites in the show benches. The cream-white flesh is of superb quality, tender and very sweet. It’s also virtually core-free and canker-resistant, making preparing them oh so much easier. Traditionally roasted alongside the Sunday joint, Tender and True can also be steamed or used in soups and stews.

Like all parsnips, Tender and True is a long-term crop, needing to be in the ground at least 8 months before harvesting after the first frost. Hardy in our climes, you can harvest parsnips all winter long as needed.

Note: Parsnip seed doesn't store well. For best results, sow a fresh crop every year.

Height and spread: 45cm (18").

Common Questions

When should you plant Tender and True Parsnip seeds? Parsnips need temperatures of about 12°C daily, so should be sown outdoors between April and June when the ground is managable. You can help the process by using cloches to keep the soil temperature higher during the colder days. Do not sow your Tender and True Parsnip seeds into cold or wet soil as your seeds won't germinate properly and will likely rot.

How long do Tender and True Parsnip seeds take to grow? Tender and True Parsnips can take anywhere between 120 and 180 days to reach a mature state ready to be harvested.

Why are my Parnsip seeds not germinating? Tender and True Parnsip seeds need a minimum temperature of 8°C to germinate properly. Waiting until the soil temperature reaches 10-12°C can eliminate the chance to rot before sprouting.
