What Are Sugar Peas (Mangetout)?

Sugar peas, often called Mangetout (French for "eat it all"), are a variety of pea harvested while the pods are still flat and tender. Unlike shelling peas, there’s no need to remove the seeds—just wash and eat!

Growing Tips for UK Gardeners:

  • Sow from March to June
  • Use netting or pea sticks to support vines
  • Harvest young before pods swell for best flavour
  • Pick regularly to encourage prolonged cropping

Sugar peas are extremely forgiving and produce well even in containers or compact garden spaces.

Culinary Uses:

Sugar peas are prized for their sweet, crisp bite and are best enjoyed:

  • Raw in salads or lunchboxes
  • Lightly sautéed or stir-fried
  • Blanched for grain bowls or noodles
  • Paired with garlic, sesame, mint or lemon zest

They make a fantastic intro crop for kids—easy to grow, fun to pick, and super snackable.
