Charlotte Seed Potatoes

Potato 'Charlotte' is one of the most popular second early varieties, prized for its smooth yellow skins and firm, waxy flesh. Producing heavy crops of long, oval tubers, Charlotte potatoes have an exceptional flavour and hold their shape beautifully when cooked – perfect for salads, boiling and steaming. With a neat, upright growth habit, they perform well in the ground, raised beds, containers or potato bags. Height and spread: approximately 60cm (24").

Optional: Keep a few seed potatoes in a cool, dark place and allow them to chit (sprout). Plant in tubs in late July or early August for a delicious crop of fresh new potatoes ready towards Christmas.

If you retain some of your harvest as seed, you can enjoy successional planting throughout the growing season. During colder months, move containers into a greenhouse or sheltered spot to protect from frost. Growing in potato tubs makes it easy to extend your season and enjoy homegrown potatoes for much of the year.

Please note: Due to increased shipping costs, our potatoes are dispatched via a 48-hour courier service. Prices have been adjusted to reflect the additional postal charges. We apologise for this necessary change and appreciate your understanding.

Common Questions

What is killing my Charlotte potato plants?
If soil conditions are overly warm and wet, fungal diseases such as Fusarium wilt can infect plant tissue. The spores live in the soil and spread easily. If infection occurs, remove and destroy affected plants promptly and treat the soil to prevent further spread. Early action is key to protecting future crops.

How long do Charlotte potatoes take to grow?
Charlotte is a second early variety and is typically ready to harvest in around 10–12 weeks. Harvest earlier for tender new potatoes, or allow tubers to mature slightly for larger salad potatoes.

Why are my Charlotte potatoes suffering from blight?
Blight is a fast-spreading fungal disease caused by Phytophthora infestans. It can spread through soil and airborne spores, particularly in warm, damp conditions. Remove affected foliage immediately to help prevent the disease from reaching the tubers and avoid planting potatoes in the same soil the following season.
