[240 Days] Also known as the “sweet heart cabbage,” Wheeler’s Imperial is an English heritage variety that remains one of the best varieties for overwintering. Bred by George Wheeler of Warminster in Wiltshire circa 1844, this cabbage likes the cold and can be harvested in February as “spring greens” or as hearted cabbaged from April on. The hearts are compact and firm, yet tender and they have a delightful flavour.
Can also be planted in the spring for an autumn crop.
How long does it take for Wheelers Imperial cabbage take to germinate? Wheelers Imperial should germinate in about 8 days at 25 degrees Celsius. Transplant your seedlings into the garden when they reach about 6 inches tall.
When should you harvest Wheelers Imperial Cabbage? You should be starting your cabbage seeds indoors 4 weeks before the last frost in Spring. Cabbage prefers cooler weather and starting indoors early will provide a harvest before the summer heat arrives.
Does Wheelers Imperial cabbage grow back after harvesting the head? No. After harvest, it is best to lift the stalk from the ground and place on the compost pile. You can leave it in the ground to break down naturally however to eliminate the risk of pests it's best to remove and compost.
