Description

Rhubarb Chard Seeds

[60 days] Rhubarb Chard is as beautiful as it is productive. With deep green, savoyed leaves and striking ruby-red stems and veins, this vibrant variety adds a bold splash of colour to both garden beds and kitchen plates. While often grown for ornamental value, it’s the flavour and versatility that keep gardeners coming back year after year.

Hardier than many leafy greens, Rhubarb Chard can be grown from early spring through to late autumn, even overwintering in milder parts of the UK. It thrives in a range of soils and can be harvested as a cut-and-come-again crop, giving you a steady supply of tender, earthy-flavoured leaves and crisp, slightly sweet stalks. Ideal for sautés, soups, stir-fries or even raw in salads when picked young.

Chard is part of the beet family but doesn’t form a bulb—so it's all about the greens and stalks here. Easy to grow and forgiving to beginners, it’s also highly productive and tolerant of light frosts.

Height: 45cm (18"). Spread: 30cm (12").

Common Questions

Can Rhubarb Chard be harvested more than once? Yes, Rhubarb Chard is a cut-and-come-again crop. Harvest the outer leaves first and leave the centre intact—it’ll continue producing fresh leaves for weeks.

Is Rhubarb Chard the same as Swiss Chard? Rhubarb Chard is a type of Swiss chard, named for its bright red stems that resemble rhubarb. While they look similar, it’s not related to actual rhubarb and is entirely edible—stalks and all.

Why is my chard bolting early? Chard can bolt in response to stress, usually from sudden temperature shifts or dry conditions. Regular watering and spacing out your sowing can help stagger harvests and avoid premature bolting.
