Senshyu Onion Seeds

[300 days] One the first onions of the season, Shenshyu yellow globes were introduced to the UK from Japan in the early 70's. In the decades since, it’s proven to be a hardy, overwintering onion that can survive temperatures down to minus 18°C (0°F). The plant itself offers superb bulbs with crisp, white flesh and straw-coloured skins.

This particular onion grows well in heavy soils and provides large bulbs with half the effort of spring-sown varieties. And since they’re ready for harvest during the drier months of June and July, outdoor curing is as easy as pie!

Recommended by the National Institute of Agricultural Botany.

Height: 45cm (18"). Spread: 10cm (4").

Common Questions

How do I stop Senshyu onions from bolting? You can stop your Senshyu onions from producing seeds by keeping them in constant conditions. If you are expecting colder weather or frosts then cover your onions with fleece or cloche, keeping them watered in hotter weather. Check your onions for evidence of flowering and snip away immediately before blooming.

Can you direct sow Senshyu onions? Yes. Direct sow your Senshyu seeds into the garden as soon as the soil is workable. Plant your seeds about 1-1.5cm deep.

How often should I water Senshyu onion seedlings? Senshyu onions require quite a bit of water but never a soggy soil bed. When watering your onions you need to irrigate to a depth of about 2.5cm and this should be done weekly rather than daily.
