(For comparison, jalapeños average between 2,500 – 8,000 SHU.) And while there are a few claims of chilies that have rated higher, none have ever done so officially, so the Carolina Reaper still has the top spot.

Small, gnarled, and usually red, these little chilies look a bit like something out of a horror flick, with most sporting warty bumps and a scorpion’s tail. Their size ranges from 1-2 inches wide (2.5–5 cm) and 2-3 inches long (5–7.6 cm). And while you might think it’s all about the heat, it turns out that the Carolina Reaper also has a fantastic flavour, one that hits you right before the heat kicks in.
