Description

Green Manure Buckwheat

Buckwheat is the green manure to reach for when you need fast cover during the warmer months. It germinates quickly and grows into a dense, broad-leaved canopy within weeks, outcompeting weeds for light before they get a foothold.

Its fine root system is particularly good at scavenging phosphorus that's otherwise locked up and unavailable in the soil, making it a useful precursor to hungry vegetable crops.

Left to flower, the pretty white blooms are a magnet for bees and hoverflies, though for the best soil benefit it's usually chopped and dug in just as flowering begins, before it has a chance to set seed and self-sow. Buckwheat is frost tender, so it's strictly a spring and summer green manure in the UK.

Common Questions

Why does Buckwheat need to be dug in before it sets seed? Buckwheat sets seed quickly once it flowers, and any seed that drops will readily self-sow, turning next season's crop into an unwanted weed. Cutting and incorporating at first flower avoids this.

Is Green Manure Buckwheat frost hardy? No - buckwheat is frost tender and will be killed off by the first autumn frost, which actually makes it a handy, self-terminating cover for a summer gap in the rotation.

What soil benefit does Buckwheat green manure give? Its roots are particularly efficient at accessing phosphorus that's bound up in the soil and unavailable to many other plants, releasing it for the following crop once the buckwheat is incorporated.
