Green Manure Winter Tares

Winter Tares is the classic autumn-sown green manure for keeping ground covered and fertile over winter rather than leaving it bare.

As a vetch, it fixes nitrogen throughout its growth, and its sprawling, semi-climbing habit forms a thick tangle of foliage that suppresses winter weeds and shields the soil surface from heavy rain and erosion.

It's reliably hardy through a typical UK winter, sitting quietly through the coldest months before putting on a fresh flush of growth as the weather warms. Cut and dig in during spring, well before the tares flower, to release the nitrogen back into the soil ahead of the next crop going in.

Common Questions

When should I sow Green Manure Winter Tares? Sow from August through to October so the crop has time to establish a reasonable root and top growth before winter sets in properly.

Will Winter Tares survive a hard UK frost? Yes, it's one of the hardiest green manures available and is specifically bred for overwintering, though very young autumn sowings can be a little more vulnerable in a severe early frost.

Do Winter Tares need any support? They have a semi-climbing, scrambling habit and will happily sprawl over the ground on their own, so no support is needed when grown as a green manure.
