Description

Green Manure Forage Pea

Forage Pea is a quick, leafy green manure that scrambles across the soil surface, forming a dense mat of foliage that shades out weed seedlings while its roots get to work fixing nitrogen.

Because it's fast to establish and quick to dig in, it's a good choice for shorter gaps in the rotation, such as between an early crop coming out and a later one going in.

The lush top growth breaks down readily once incorporated, releasing nitrogen back into the soil for whatever's planted next. It can be sown on its own or mixed with a cereal such as oats to give the sprawling pea foliage something to climb through.

Common Questions

How long does Green Manure Forage Pea need before digging in? Around 8-10 weeks is usually enough to build a good amount of leafy growth and nitrogen-fixing nodules, after which it should be cut and incorporated before flowering.

Does Forage Pea need support to grow well? It has a natural scrambling habit and will sprawl across the ground on its own, though sowing it alongside a cereal such as oats gives it something to lean on and can improve overall biomass.

Can Forage Pea be used for a short summer gap? Yes, its fast growth rate makes it one of the better options for filling a brief gap of two to three months between crops in the rotation.
