Description

Green Manure Red Clover

Red Clover is the green manure of choice when a bed can be spared for the best part of a growing season, or even overwintered into the next.

Unlike the faster annual green manures, it establishes more slowly but keeps working for much longer, fixing nitrogen steadily throughout its life and building a deep, fibrous root system that improves soil structure over time.

Its dense, low growth also does a thorough job of suppressing perennial weeds if left in place for an extended period. Red Clover can be cut back periodically to encourage fresh growth and prevent it flowering, or left to bloom for pollinators before a final incorporation.

Common Questions

How long can Green Manure Red Clover be left in the ground? It can be left down for a full season or even overwintered into the following year, making it best suited to a bed that isn't needed for cropping in the short term.

Does Red Clover need cutting while it's growing? Cutting it back two or three times over the season keeps growth fresh and vigorous, prevents it running to flower too early, and adds extra organic matter as the cuttings break down on the surface.

Is Red Clover good for pollinators? Very much so - if you can afford to let a patch flower before digging in, the blooms are a valuable nectar source for bumblebees in particular.
