Description

Green Manure Field Bean

Field Bean is one of the most reliable green manures for autumn sowing, putting down a deep, robust root system that copes well with heavier soils and continues fixing nitrogen right through into winter.

As a legume it partners with soil bacteria to pull nitrogen from the air and lock it into root nodules, leaving a store of fertility behind once the crop is dug in.

Its upright growth habit and dense foliage also do a good job of suppressing weeds and protecting bare ground from winter rain and erosion. Field Bean is best incorporated in spring before it flowers, giving the following crop a well-structured, nutrient-rich bed to grow into.

Common Questions

When should I dig in Green Manure Field Bean? Cut and incorporate the crop in early spring, ideally before it flowers, so the nitrogen locked in the foliage and roots breaks down and becomes available to the following crop rather than being used up on seed production.

Does Field Bean need any support? Not usually - Field Bean is a sturdy, self-supporting green manure and doesn't need staking or netting the way climbing beans grown for a harvest would.

Can Green Manure Field Bean overwinter outside? Yes, it's one of the hardier green manure options and will happily sit through a typical UK winter, resuming growth as temperatures pick up in spring.
